October 2014 General Conference - The First Presidency
An examination of the discourses delivered during the October 2014 General Conference of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day saints reveals that prophetic priorities are affirmed as prophets repeat the words of prophets. What do we learn from the following quotes? What do you find significant as you link the messages that have come to us across time through different prophets?
Thomas S. Monson - Guided Safely Home:
Message: "We look heavenward for that unfailing sense of direction, that we might chart and follow a wise and proper course."The Apostle Paul: "Be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity." (I Timothy 4:12) [He also taught] the followers of Christ should be “as lights in the world.” (Phillipians 2:15)
President N. Eldon Tanner gave us this inspired counsel: “Nothing will bring greater joy and success than to live according to the teachings of the gospel. Be an example; be an influence for good. Every one of us has been foreordained for some work as [God’s] chosen servant on whom he has seen fit to confer the priesthood and power to act in his name. Always remember that people are looking to you for leadership and you are influencing the lives of individuals either for good or for bad, which influence will be felt for generations to come.” (Ensign, November 1975, 74)
Thomas S. Monson - Until We Meet Again:
Message: May we all ponder the truths we have heard, and may they help us to become even more valiant disciples.
May we follow the mandate to “succor the weak, lift up the hands which hang down, and strengthen the feeble knees.” (D&C 81:5)
May we be people of honesty and integrity, trying to do the right thing at all times and in all circumstances. May we be faithful followers of Christ, examples of righteousness, thus becoming “lights in the world.” (Philippians 2:15)
Henry B. Eyring - The Preparatory Priesthood:
The Prophet Alma: “And we see that death comes upon mankind, yea, the death which has been spoken of by Amulek, which is the temporal death; nevertheless there was a space granted unto man in which he might repent; therefore this life became a probationary state; a time to prepare to meet God; a time to prepare for that endless state which has been spoken of by us, which is after the resurrection of the dead.” (Alma 42:10, 13)
Henry B. Eyring - Continuing Revelation:
Message: Human judgment and logical thinking will not be enough to get answers to the questions that matter most in life. We need revelation from God.
President Boyd K. Packer described [the] identifying mark of the true Church this way: “Revelation continues in the Church: the prophet receiving it for the Church; the president for his stake, his mission, or his quorum; the bishop for his ward; the father for his family; the individual for himself.” - Repeated at the beginning and at the end of President Eyrings remarks - Ensign, May 1974, 95)
Dieter F. Uchtdorf - Receiving a Testimony of Light and Truth:
Message: Your personal testimony of light and truth will not only bless you and your posterity here in mortality, but it will also accompany you throughout all eternity... Gaining a testimony is not a task of a minute, an hour, or a day. It is not once and done. The process of gathering spiritual light is the quest of a lifetime.
The Apostle Paul taught ... regarding spiritual knowledge. “The natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned ... but unto [those who] are saved it is the power of God.” (1 Corinthians 2:14 and 1:18)
Dieter F. Uchtdorf - Lord, Is It I?:
Message: We must put aside our pride, see beyond our vanity, and in humility ask, “Lord, is it I?”
The Apostle James: “God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble. … Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up." (James 4:6, 10)
